Why I Became a Financial Advisor

Why I Became a Financial Advisor

October 04, 2022

Many people struggle with the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Either they have an unrealistic idea of what their dream job will be like, or they genuinely have no idea what they want to do; or maybe they have multiple ideas and struggle with choosing and sticking to one profession. Fortunately, answering this question was not difficult for me.

Experiencing a family-run business growing up in my hometown of Freeport, Maine, gave me unique insight into the challenges facing small business owners. When it came time to choose a profession, I knew that in addition to one day becoming a third-generation small business owner, I wanted to use my interest and skills in finance to have a significant impact on people’s lives. With that goal in mind, I set out to become a financial advisor so I could support other small businesses in my community and help them achieve their goals and dreams.

Starting My Career

After earning my bachelor’s degree, I entered the financial industry, learning my trade in the big cities of New York and Boston. I worked for various large firms gaining years of valuable experience. Along the way, I added to my education and training by earning an MBA in International Finance and my Series 7 and Series 66 licenses.

But the dream of owning my own small business and helping others in my hometown never went away. With years of education and experience under my belt, I ventured out on my own and opened my firm, James Financial Group, in 2018.

My Career Today

Today I get to spend my days helping family-owned and nonprofit businesses and entrepreneurs overcome obstacles so they can achieve their financial and life goals.

Entrepreneurs tend to have more complex needs, and that’s where I can really add some value with my experience in business, estate, and generational planning strategies. I also like to help small business owners who are struggling to manage their tax burden and are ready to start saving money for retirement, or want to create an attractive benefits package for their employees.

Why I Love What I Do

Working in the wealth management industry allows me to serve as a bridge between Wall Street and Main Street, and I love how those two different experiences can work together. My family also motivates me to work hard at what I do so I can provide for them. It’s very satisfying to know that by doing what I love and am passionate about, I can provide for my family and help other families do the same.

At the end of the day, I know I have done my job well when I see my clients achieving their goals and the positive ripple effect that has on the community. It’s one of the most fulfilling aspects of my job.
